The villa was built as a royal residence; is located in thePosillipo district and is one of the three official residences of the President of the Italian Republic and for this reason cannot be visited, except in certain periods of the year.
The villa owes its origin to the initiative of the Austrian officer Joseph Von Thurn who from 1801 bought some funds in a pleasant position on Capo Posillipo to erect a country residence surrounded by a garden, as well as large orchards and vineyards. The property was later purchased by the princess of Gerace and her son, Agostino Serra di Oristano, who converted it into a representative villa.
Thanks to the contribution of the architects Stefano and Luigi Gasse, the villa was transformed into an elegant residence and the small houses of relevance were also renovated.
In 1857 the Serra heirs sold the villa to Luigi of Bourbon, commander of the Royal Navy of the Kingdomof the Two Sicilies. The villa was then sold to the banker French Gustave Delahante, to then be purchased in the1897 by Lord Rosebery, British statesman who had beenhead of cabinet from 1894 to 1895. Starting in 1957,became one of the residences supplied to the President of the Italian republic.
